When Spot Repairs Stop Making Sense
One pinhole leak in a galvanized pipe gets patched. Then another one shows up two months later. Then a third. At some point, and that point is different for every home, the math shifts. Patching an aging pipe system that’s failing throughout the house costs more in the long run than replacing it all at once while the walls are accessible.
Â
Whole house repiping replaces your entire supply system with modern materials, PEX, copper, or CPVC depending on the application, that are built to last for decades. It’s one of the most significant plumbing projects a homeowner can undertake, and it’s one we handle carefully: written estimate upfront, clear project timeline, and the work done to Illinois code with a proper inspection.
Â
Priority Plumbing Services is licensed, bonded, and insured in Illinois (License No. 055-045366). We serve residential and commercial customers throughout Metro East Illinois, and we’re one of the only plumbers in the area with a dedicated repiping service. Every repiping project is backed by our 1-year warranty and 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Signs Your Home May Need Repiping
- Brown, Red, or Rust-Colored Water From Multiple Fixtures
Discolored water from a single faucet often points to a localized issue, a failing water heater, a corroded fixture. Rust-colored water from multiple fixtures throughout the house points to corroding galvanized supply lines. Once galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out, the rust doesn’t stop, it gets worse until the pipe fails entirely.Â
Â
Urgency: Call soon — rust in your water supply is a health and infrastructure concern.
- Low Water Pressure Throughout the Whole House
Galvanized steel pipe corrodes and scales from the inside over time, progressively narrowing the interior diameter. A home that used to have strong pressure throughout but has gradually lost it, at every fixture, not just one, is a classic sign of widespread galvanized pipe scaling throughout the supply system.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule an assessment — pressure loss from scaling is progressive and won’t improve on its own.
- Pipes That Keep Leaking in Different Spots
A single pinhole leak in a galvanized or aging copper pipe can be repaired. Two or three leaks in different locations within a short span of time is a signal that the pipe system as a whole is failing, not just at one point. Continued spot repairs on deteriorating pipe is a holding pattern, not a solution.
Â
Urgency: Call for an assessment — multiple leaks in aging pipe often means repiping is the more cost-effective path.
- Your Home Was Built Before 1980 and Has Never Been Repiped
A significant portion of Metro East Illinois homes were built between the 1950s and 1970s, many with original galvanized steel supply lines. Galvanized pipe has a typical lifespan of 40–70 years. If your home is in that age range and the plumbing has never been updated, an assessment is worth having before a failure forces the decision.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule an assessment — original pipe in a 50+ year old home is approaching or past expected lifespan.
- You Have Polybutylene Pipe
Polybutylene pipe, a gray flexible plastic installed in many homes between the late 1970s and mid-1990s, is known to fail without warning. If your home has polybutylene supply lines, repiping is recommended regardless of whether you’ve had leaks yet. The failure mode is sudden and the water damage potential is significant.Â
Â
Urgency: Call for an assessment — polybutylene pipe warrants proactive replacement.
Types of Repiping We Handle
- Galvanized Pipe Replacement
The most common repiping job in Metro East Illinois, replacing aging galvanized steel supply lines with modern PEX or copper. We repipe the full supply system, restore water pressure, and eliminate the rust and scaling that comes with deteriorated galvanized pipe.
- Polybutylene Pipe Replacement
Full replacement of polybutylene supply lines, the gray plastic pipe found in many homes built between the late 1970s and early 1990s. We replace the entire supply system with PEX or copper and document the work for homeowner insurance and disclosure purposes.
- Copper Repiping & Partial Repipe
Aging or pinhole-prone copper pipe replacement, partial repipe of a specific zone or floor, and copper-to-PEX conversion. Not every repiping project requires replacing the entire house, we assess what’s actually failing and recommend the scope that makes sense.
- Commercial Repiping
Supply system replacement for commercial facilities, multi-unit residential buildings, and rental properties with aging pipe throughout Metro East Illinois. Commercial repiping is scoped and scheduled to minimize operational disruption, we work with property managers and facility owners on project timing.
Benefits of Whole House Repiping
- Restore Water Pressure and Water Quality
Corroded galvanized pipe narrows over time, reducing pressure and introducing rust and sediment into your water supply. Modern PEX pipe maintains full interior diameter throughout its lifespan, no scaling, no corrosion, no rust in the water. Homeowners who repipe aging galvanized systems typically see immediate, noticeable improvement in both water pressure and water clarity.
- Stop the Cycle of Spot Repairs
Every pinhole repair on a failing galvanized system is money spent on a system that will continue to fail. Repiping ends that cycle, one project, one cost, decades of reliable service. PEX supply lines carry a typical lifespan of 25–50 years. Copper, installed correctly, lasts 50 years or more.
- Protect Your Home's Value
Known galvanized or polybutylene pipe is a red flag in a home sale, inspectors flag it, buyers negotiate around it, and some mortgage lenders won’t approve financing on a home with polybutylene supply lines. Repiping before listing removes that obstacle and is a documented improvement that supports your asking price.
- One Licensed Project Done to Code
A whole house repipe in Illinois requires a permit and inspection. We pull the permit, complete the work to current Illinois plumbing code, schedule the inspection, and pass it. The project is documented, on record, and backed by our 1-year warranty. If something isn’t right after we finish, we come back and address it.
- Financing Available for a Significant Investment
Whole house repiping is a meaningful home investment, typically $5,000 to $15,000 depending on home size, pipe material, and scope. We offer financing through Wisetack with quick pre-qualification and multiple tiers for all credit levels so the project is manageable without delaying necessary work.

Whole House Repiping Questions
How do I know if I need a full repipe or just spot repairs?
If you’ve had one leak in a specific location, spot repair is usually the right call. If you’ve had multiple leaks in different locations, have rust-colored water from several fixtures, or have low pressure throughout the house on a pre-1980 home, a full repipe assessment is worth having. We give you an honest recommendation with the reasoning behind it.
How long does the whole house repiping take?
Most single-family homes are repiped in 2 to 4 days depending on size and accessibility. Water is shut off during active work periods and restored at the end of each day where possible. We give you a clear project timeline in the written estimate so you know what to expect before we start.
What pipe material do you use for repiping?
PEX is the most common material for whole house repiping, flexible, freeze-resistant, corrosion-proof, and significantly easier to route through existing walls than rigid pipe. Copper is an option for specific applications or homeowner preference. We recommend the right material for your home and explain the tradeoffs during the estimate.
Does repiping require opening all my walls?
Not necessarily. PEX can often be run through existing wall cavities with minimal access cuts, especially compared to rigid copper or galvanized. The number of access points depends on your home’s layout and framing. We plan access strategically to minimize drywall work and discuss the approach with you before starting.
Is whole house repiping covered by homeowner's insurance?
Typically no, repiping is a planned improvement, not sudden accidental damage. However, water damage caused by a burst or failed pipe may be covered depending on your policy. We provide documentation of all our work that you can share with your insurer. Ask your insurance provider about your specific coverage.
Do you repipe commercial properties and rental buildings?
Yes. Multi-unit residential buildings, rental properties, and commercial facilities with aging pipe throughout Metro East Illinois. Commercial repiping projects are scoped and scheduled to minimize tenant and operational disruption. Call (618) 207-1647 to discuss your property.
