When a Snake Pushes the Clog Through, Hydro Jetting Removes It
A drain snake is a useful tool. It punches through a clog, restores flow, and clears most single-fixture blockages efficiently. But a snake doesn’t clean the pipe, it creates a path through whatever is blocking it. Grease coating the pipe walls, mineral scale, root tendrils, and compacted debris stay right where they are. The drain flows again, until the next buildup catches on what the snake left behind.
Â
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water, typically 3,000 to 4,000 PSI, to scour the interior walls of the drain or sewer line. It doesn’t just open the blockage, it removes it entirely, along with the grease, scale, and debris buildup that causes the next one. For recurring clogs, root intrusion, grease-heavy commercial drain lines, and main sewer lines that need more than a cable clearing, hydro jetting is the right tool.
Â
We provide hydro jetting for residential and commercial customers throughout Metro East Illinois. Priority Plumbing Services is licensed, bonded, and insured in Illinois (License No. 055-045366). Every hydro jetting job is backed by our 1-year warranty and 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Signs Hydro Jetting May Be the Right Solution
- Drain Keeps Clogging After Snaking
A drain that’s been snaked and clears, then clogs again within weeks, is telling you the snake addressed the symptom but not the cause. Recurring clogs after cable cleaning typically mean grease buildup on the pipe walls, root intrusion that’s growing back, or heavy scale accumulation that snaking can’t remove. Hydro jetting clears the pipe wall, not just the blockage point.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule hydro jetting alongside or instead of the next snaking, the pattern isn’t going to change on its own.
- Slow Drains Throughout the House After Multiple Cleanings
If your main line has been cleaned repeatedly and drains are still slow throughout the house, the line likely has significant buildup that cable cleaning hasn’t fully addressed. Grease accumulation and scale build up on the interior pipe wall over years, narrowing the effective diameter of the line until flow becomes consistently restricted regardless of cleaning.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule soon, a main line with heavy buildup will eventually clog completely.
- Commercial Kitchen Drains Clogging Frequently
Restaurant kitchen drain lines accumulate grease faster than any residential drain. A commercial kitchen running at full volume coats its drain lines with grease daily, and that grease hardens over time into a buildup that standard cleaning can’t fully remove. Hydro jetting is the standard of care for commercial kitchen drain lines and grease interceptor inlet lines.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule on a regular maintenance cycle — commercial kitchen drains that aren’t hydro jetted periodically will fail at the worst possible time.
- Tree Roots Growing Back Into the Sewer Line
Root intrusion cleared with a cable machine is temporary, the root tendrils are cut but the roots themselves continue growing back through the same joint or crack. Hydro jetting removes root material from the pipe more thoroughly than mechanical cutting and flushes the debris clear of the line. It’s typically paired with a camera inspection to assess the extent of root damage and whether pipe repair is needed.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule soon after cable clearing — roots grow back faster than most homeowners expect.
- Pre-Sale Sewer Line Cleaning
Sellers and buyers conducting sewer inspections before a home sale benefit from hydro jetting to clear the line before the camera inspection, giving both parties a clear view of actual pipe condition without debris and grease obscuring what the camera sees. A clean line inspection is a more accurate inspection.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule before the sewer scope if debris or buildup is suspected — a cleaner line gives a clearer picture.
Types of Hydro Jetting We Handle
- Residential Sewer Line Hydro Jetting
Main sewer line cleaning for homes with recurring clogs, slow drainage throughout the house, or root intrusion history. We run a camera inspection before hydro jetting older lines to confirm the pipe is in condition to handle high-pressure cleaning, a cracked or heavily deteriorated pipe needs repair before jetting.
- Commercial Kitchen & Grease Line Jetting
High-pressure cleaning of restaurant kitchen drain lines, grease interceptor inlet lines, and commercial drain systems. Grease buildup in commercial kitchen lines requires hydro jetting to remove, cable cleaning clears a path but doesn’t address the hardened grease coating the pipe walls. Scheduled hydro jetting is the most effective way to prevent commercial kitchen drain failures.
- Root Intrusion Clearing
High-pressure jetting to remove root material from sewer lines, more thorough than cable cutting alone. Paired with camera inspection to assess root entry points and pipe condition. When root damage is confirmed, we provide repair or relining options to address the entry point and prevent regrowth.
- Preventative Drain Maintenance Jetting
Scheduled hydro jetting for commercial facilities, restaurants, and residential customers with known drain history issues. Cleaning the line before it blocks, rather than after, is significantly less disruptive and less expensive than an emergency main line backup. We build maintenance jetting into commercial drain service agreements where applicable.
Benefits of Hydro Jetting
- Clean Pipe, Not Just Open Pipe
The difference between cable cleaning and hydro jetting is the difference between punching a hole through a clog and removing everything coating the pipe wall. After hydro jetting, the interior of the drain line is as close to its original diameter as the pipe condition allows. Grease, scale, debris, and root fragments are flushed out of the system entirely, not left on the walls to catch the next blockage.
- Longer Time Between Clogs
A hydro jetted drain line stays clear significantly longer than one cleared with a cable machine, especially in grease-heavy commercial applications and in residential lines with root history. The thorough cleaning removes the buildup that accelerates the next clog. For commercial kitchens in particular, scheduled hydro jetting is far less expensive than repeated emergency drain calls.
- Effective Against Root Intrusion
Root tendrils cleared by a cable machine are cut at one point, the root system continues growing back through the same joint. High-pressure jetting removes root material more completely and flushes the debris from the line. Paired with a camera inspection and pipe repair or relining at the entry point, hydro jetting is part of a long-term root management approach.
- Safe for Sound Pipe in Good Condition
Hydro jetting is safe for pipe in good structural condition, cast iron, PVC, ABS, and clay tile that isn’t cracked or heavily deteriorated can all be hydro jetted without damage. We run a camera inspection before jetting older lines to confirm the pipe condition first. We don’t have a jet pipe that can’t handle it, that’s how repairs turn into replacements.

Hydro Jetting Questions
What is hydro jetting and how does it work?
Hydro jetting uses water pressurized to 3,000–4,000 PSI directed through a specialized nozzle inserted into the drain line. The forward-facing jet cuts through blockages while rear-facing jets scour the pipe walls and propel the head forward through the line. Everything loosened, grease, scale, debris, and root fragments, is flushed out of the drain system. The result is a clean pipe interior, not just an open one.
Hydro jetting vs snaking, which is better?
For most single-fixture clogs, a cable snake is faster and sufficient, it clears the blockage and restores flow at a lower cost. For main line blockages, recurring clogs, grease buildup, root intrusion, and commercial drain lines, hydro jetting is more effective because it cleans the pipe rather than just opening it. We recommend the right method for the specific drain situation, not one over the other as a default.
Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?
Yes, for pipes in good structural condition. PVC, cast iron, ABS, and clay tile that isn’t cracked or heavily deteriorated handle hydro jetting well. We inspect older lines with a camera before jetting to confirm the pipe condition first. If the pipe isn’t in condition to be hydro jetted safely, we’ll tell you and recommend the appropriate repair or lining before cleaning.
How often should I hydro jet my drains?
For residential main sewer lines without root history, every 18–24 months is a reasonable maintenance interval if you’ve had recurring issues. For restaurant kitchen drain lines, every 3–6 months is common depending on cooking volume and grease load. For residential lines with active root intrusion, the interval is driven by how quickly roots regrow, a camera inspection tells you where you stand.
How much does hydro jetting cost?
Hydro jetting runs more than standard cable cleaning because of the equipment and time involved, but it clears more thoroughly and lasts longer between cleanings, making it the more cost-effective solution for recurring drain problems. We provide written estimates before any work begins. Financing is available through Wisetack for larger drain projects.
Do you offer hydro jetting for commercial properties?
Yes. Commercial kitchen drain lines, grease interceptor inlet lines, commercial main sewer lines, and floor drains throughout Metro East Illinois. Hydro jetting for commercial applications is one of our most requested drain services, especially for restaurants and food service facilities where grease buildup is a constant challenge. We also include hydro jetting in commercial maintenance contracts.
