Backflow Testing Is Required, We Make It Simple

Most commercial properties connected to the public water supply in Illinois are required by the Illinois EPA to have their backflow prevention assemblies tested annually by a certified tester. It’s not optional. A missed test or a failed device that isn’t repaired puts your water service compliance at risk and, more importantly, puts the public water supply at risk of contamination.

We’re certified backflow testers serving commercial properties, businesses, restaurants, property managers, and residential irrigation and fire suppression systems throughout Metro East Illinois, including Madison, Bond, Clinton, Montgomery, and Macoupin Counties. We test, certify, repair, and install backflow prevention assemblies and handle the documentation so you have what you need for your annual compliance record.

Priority Plumbing Services is licensed, bonded, and insured in Illinois (License No. 055-045366) and EPA certified. Backflow prevention is one of our top commercial services, we’ve built specific expertise here because it’s recurring, compliance-driven work that commercial clients need a reliable partner for year after year. Every backflow job is backed by our 1-year warranty and 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Signs Your Backflow Prevention System Needs Attention

Most Metro East Illinois municipalities that enforce backflow testing requirements send annual notices to commercial property owners with registered backflow prevention assemblies. If you’ve received a testing notice or a compliance deadline, that’s your signal to schedule. Annual testing must be performed by a certified tester, we handle the test, the repair if needed, and the documentation submitted to your municipality.

Urgency: Schedule before your compliance deadline — late testing can result in notices of violation or water service interruption.

If you’ve taken over a commercial property, opened a new business, or simply aren’t sure when the backflow preventer on your property was last tested, it’s worth finding out. An untested device may have been out of compliance for years. We can locate the assembly, assess its condition, and get you current on testing and documentation.

Urgency: Call soon — unknown compliance status is a liability worth resolving.

A backflow prevention assembly that’s leaking at the test cocks, dripping from the relief valve, or showing visible corrosion or physical damage is failing. A failing device may not be preventing backflow, which is its entire job. We repair or replace assemblies that fail testing or show visible signs of failure.

Urgency: Call soon — a visibly failing backflow preventer needs repair or replacement before the next annual test.

New irrigation systems and fire suppression systems require a backflow prevention assembly as part of the installation, it’s a code requirement in Illinois. We install the correct backflow device for the application, test and certify it at installation, and register it with the municipality where required.

Urgency: Coordinate early in the installation — backflow installation is part of the system connection process, not an afterthought.

A change in business operations, adding a chemical mixing station, expanding a commercial kitchen, adding a boiler or cooling system, may change the cross connection risk profile of your facility and require upgrading or adding backflow prevention. We assess your current assembly against your current operations and confirm it’s the right device for your risk level.

Urgency: Call for an assessment when operations change — a device correctly sized for one use may not be adequate for another.

Types of Backflow Prevention Service We Handle

Certified testing of RPZ valves, double check valve assemblies, pressure vacuum breakers, and other backflow prevention devices, performed by a licensed, certified tester to Illinois EPA standards. We complete the test, document the results, and provide the certification paperwork you need for municipal compliance. If the device passes, you’re certified for another year. If it fails, we repair it and retest before submitting documentation.

Repair of RPZ assemblies and other backflow devices that fail testing, relief valve replacement, check valve seat repair, internal component service, performed by a certified technician who understands the device’s function and the repair standard required for certification. We repair and retest in the same service call whenever parts are available.

New backflow prevention assembly installation for commercial properties, irrigation systems, fire suppression connections, and any application requiring a cross connection control device. We select the correct device type and size for the specific application, RPZ, double check, pressure vacuum breaker, or atmospheric vacuum breaker, and install it to Illinois plumbing code and manufacturer specifications.

Residential and commercial irrigation systems and fire suppression systems require dedicated backflow prevention assemblies at the connection to the potable water supply. We test, certify, repair, and install backflow devices for both system types throughout Metro East Illinois, annual testing and certification included.

Benefits of Working With a Certified Backflow Tester

Illinois EPA backflow testing requirements apply to most commercial properties connected to the public water supply. The testing must be performed annually by a certified tester, and the certification documentation must be submitted to the municipality. We handle the test, the paperwork, and the submission so compliance is a phone call to schedule, not a process you manage yourself. We also remind you when your next annual test is due.

Backflow testing documentation submitted by an uncertified tester isn’t valid — it won’t satisfy the municipality’s compliance requirement regardless of whether the test was performed correctly. Our testers are certified to Illinois standards, and our documentation is accepted by municipalities throughout our Metro East Illinois service area. You get one test, one certification, one submission, done correctly the first time.

A backflow preventer that fails a test needs repair before it can be certified. If the failure is a common component, relief valve, check seat, internal spring, we carry repair parts and can address the failure and retest the device in the same service call. You don’t schedule the test, schedule a repair, and schedule a retest on three separate days. We aim to complete it in one visit.

Backflow prevention exists to protect the public water supply from contamination by reversing flow from a commercial or residential facility back into the distribution system. A facility that allows backflow contamination, because their device failed or was never tested, faces significant liability beyond just a compliance violation. Annual testing by a certified tester is both a legal obligation and a straightforward liability management step.

Backflow Prevention Questions

Is backflow testing required every year in Illinois?

For most commercial properties connected to the public water supply in Illinois, restaurants, offices, retail spaces, multi-unit residential buildings, and any facility with a cross connection risk, yes. Illinois EPA cross connection control requirements mandate annual testing by a certified tester. The specific enforcement varies by municipality, but most Metro East Illinois municipalities with active backflow programs require annual certification. Call us and we’ll confirm what applies to your property.

A backflow preventer is a valve assembly installed at the connection between a facility’s plumbing and the public water supply. Its job is to prevent water from flowing backward, from the facility back into the distribution system, in the event of a pressure drop or back siphonage condition. Without a properly functioning backflow preventer, contaminated water from a commercial kitchen, chemical system, or irrigation line could enter the public water supply. Annual testing confirms the device is still performing its function.

A failed test means the device isn’t performing to the standard required for certification. We repair the failing component, relief valve, check seat, internal spring, and retest the device before submitting any certification documentation. A failed device that isn’t repaired and retested cannot be certified. We aim to complete repair and retest in the same service visit when parts are available.

RPZ stands for Reduced Pressure Zone, a specific type of backflow prevention assembly used for high-hazard cross connection applications. It’s the most common commercial backflow device in Metro East Illinois and is required for most commercial facilities, irrigation systems connected to potable water, and fire suppression systems. It looks like a horizontal pipe assembly with two check valves, a relief valve in the middle, and test cocks. If you’re not sure what type of device you have, we identify it during the service visit.

Residential properties with irrigation systems connected to the potable water supply typically require a backflow prevention device, and in many municipalities, annual testing. Residential fire suppression systems also require backflow protection. If you have an in-ground irrigation system or a residential fire sprinkler system, call us and we’ll confirm what your municipality requires.

Backflow testing is straightforward and priced accordingly, we provide upfront pricing when you call. Repair cost depends on the component that failed and whether parts are available same-visit. Installation pricing depends on the device type, size, and connection configuration. We provide written estimates before any installation work begins. Ask about annual service agreements for commercial clients who want testing, repair, and documentation handled automatically each year.
