Better Water Starts at the Point of Entry
Hard water leaves white scale on your fixtures and shortens the life of your water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine. Chlorine and disinfection byproducts from municipal treatment affect the taste and smell of your tap water. Well water in rural Metro East Illinois can carry iron, sulfur, sediment, and bacteria that city water regulations don’t apply to. These aren’t uncommon problems in this area, they’re the norm for a significant portion of homes.
Â
A whole home water filtration system or water softener addresses the problem at the point of entry, before water reaches any fixture, appliance, or glass in your home. We install and service both for residential and commercial customers throughout Metro East Illinois, and we help you identify which solution, or which combination, is right for your water and your situation.
Â
Priority Plumbing Services is licensed, bonded, and insured in Illinois (License No. 055-045366). We’re also certified HALO Water Treatment installers, the only plumbers in Metro East Illinois who can properly install and service the HALO 5 whole home treatment system. Every water quality installation is backed by our 1-year warranty and 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Signs Your Home May Need Water Treatment
- White or Yellow Scale on Faucets, Showerheads, and Appliances
White or yellowish mineral deposits building up on faucets, showerhead nozzles, glass shower doors, and inside your dishwasher are the most visible signs of hard water, high calcium and magnesium content in your supply. The same scale that builds on fixtures builds inside your pipes, water heater, and appliances, reducing efficiency and shortening equipment life over time.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule an assessment, hard water scale on fixtures means it’s accumulating inside your plumbing and appliances too.
- Water Tastes or Smells Like Chlorine
Municipal water is treated with chlorine or chloramines to kill bacteria in the distribution system, and residual chlorine reaches your tap. Some households barely notice it. Others find the taste and smell of chlorinated tap water affects cooking and drinking. A whole home carbon filtration system removes residual chlorine and treatment byproducts at the point of entry.Â
Â
Urgency: No urgency — a quality of life and health consideration worth addressing at your pace.
- Skin Feels Dry, Hair Looks Dull After Showering
Hard water doesn’t lather soap as effectively as soft water, it reacts with soap to form calcium soap scum that deposits on skin and hair rather than rinsing clean. Dry skin, dull hair, and the feeling that you’re never fully rinsed off are consistent complaints from hard water households. Water softening addresses this directly, the difference showering in soft water vs hard water is immediately noticeable.Â
Â
Urgency: No urgency — comfort and quality of life concern that softening resolves.
- Your Water Heater Needs Frequent Maintenance or Is Failing Early
Hard water scale accumulates on the heating elements of electric water heaters and on the bottom of gas tank water heaters, reducing efficiency, increasing energy use, and shortening the unit’s effective lifespan. If your water heater is underperforming or has needed early replacement, hard water is a likely contributing factor. Softening the supply water is one of the most effective ways to extend water heater life.Â
Â
Urgency: Address the water quality alongside the water heater, treating the symptom without fixing the cause means the next water heater fails early too.
- You're on Well Water and Haven't Tested It Recently
Well water in Bond, Clinton, and Montgomery Counties can contain iron, sulfur, sediment, bacteria, nitrates, and other contaminants that municipal water treatment addresses automatically. Without testing, you don’t know what’s in your water. A water quality test followed by a targeted filtration or treatment system is the right sequence, not guessing at a solution before knowing the problem.Â
Â
Urgency: Schedule testing — the EPA recommends annual well water testing for private wells.Â
Types of Water Filtration & Softener Systems We Install
- Whole Home Water Filtration Systems
Point-of-entry filtration systems installed on the main water line where it enters the home, treating all water before it reaches any fixture, appliance, or outlet. Carbon filtration systems remove chlorine, chloramines, disinfection byproducts, and organic compounds. Multi-stage systems address sediment, chlorine, and a broader range of contaminants in sequence. We size and select the right system for your water source and the specific contaminants present.
- Traditional Salt-Based Water Softeners
Ion exchange water softeners replace calcium and magnesium, the minerals responsible for hardness, with sodium ions, producing genuinely softened water throughout the home. Salt-based softeners are the most effective solution for moderate to very hard water and produce a noticeable difference in water feel, soap lathering, and scale reduction on fixtures and appliances. Require periodic salt replenishment and occasional resin regeneration.
- Salt-Free Water Conditioners
Salt-free water conditioning systems use template-assisted crystallization or similar technology to change the form of hardness minerals, preventing them from depositing as scale without removing them from the water or adding sodium. No salt, no regeneration, no drain connection required. Effective for scale prevention in moderate hard water conditions. We assess your water hardness level and recommend whether salt-free conditioning is appropriate for your specific situation.
- HALO Water Treatment System
The HALO 5 whole home system combines multi-stage filtration with the HALO ION inline water conditioner, addressing hard water, chlorine, chloramines, sediment, and a broad range of contaminants in a single unit. Salt-free, no regeneration, minimal maintenance. We’re certified HALO installers, one of the only plumbers in Metro East Illinois authorized to install and service this system correctly.Â
Benefits of Professional Water Treatment Installation
- Protect Your Plumbing and Appliances
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that approximately 85% of American homes have hard water to some degree. In Metro East Illinois, particularly in areas with limestone geology, water hardness is a consistent challenge. The hard water scale inside pipes progressively reduces flow. Scale on water heater heating elements and tank bottoms reduces efficiency and causes early failure. A properly installed water softener or treatment system protects everything downstream, pipes, water heater, dishwasher, washing machine, and all fixtures.
- Correct Sizing for Your Home and Water Conditions
A water softener sized too small for the hardness level and household demand runs its regeneration cycle constantly and still doesn’t fully soften the water. A filtration system with the wrong media for your water’s contaminant profile doesn’t address what’s actually in your water. We test your water, size the equipment correctly, and select the right system for your specific conditions, not the easiest one to sell.
- Professional Installation That Performs as Designed
A water treatment system installed with incorrect bypass valve configuration, wrong inlet and outlet orientation, or inadequate drain connection won’t perform the way it was designed, and may cause problems with the plumbing it’s connected to. We install every system to manufacturer specifications and Illinois plumbing code, and we test performance before we leave. Every installation is backed by our 1-year warranty.
- Ongoing Water Quality for Drinking, Cooking, and Bathing
The water you drink, cook with, and bathe in every day reflects the quality of your supply and your treatment system. Removing excess minerals, chlorine, and contaminants at the point of entry improves every use like taste, clarity, skin and hair feel, and the long-term condition of the plumbing and appliances that water runs through. It’s a home infrastructure improvement that pays back daily.
- Commercial Water Quality Solutions
Commercial facilities, restaurants, food service operations, office buildings, benefit from water treatment for equipment protection and water quality compliance. A restaurant with hard water supply damages its commercial dishwasher, ice machine, and coffee equipment faster than one with treated water. We install and service commercial water filtration and conditioning systems throughout Metro East Illinois.

Water Filtration & Softener Questions
Water softener vs water filter, which do I need?
They address different problems. A water softener specifically targets hardness, calcium and magnesium that causes scale, soap interference, and appliance damage. A water filtration system addresses a broader range of contaminants, chlorine, sediment, organic compounds, and in multi-stage systems, a wider contaminant profile. The HALO 5 system does both in one unit. Many homes benefit from both, a softener for hardness and a carbon filter for taste and chlorine. We assess your water and recommend what’s actually needed.
Do I need a water softener in Metro East Illinois?
Water hardness varies across Metro East Illinois depending on your water source and municipality. Municipal water in the area generally tests in the moderately hard to very hard range, enough to cause scale on fixtures, reduce water heater efficiency, and affect soap lathering. If you’ve noticed white scale on your fixtures or your water heater is underperforming, a softener or HALO conditioner is worth considering. We can test your water hardness and give you a specific answer.
What is the difference between salt-based and salt-free water softening?
A salt-based ion exchange softener removes hardness minerals from the water entirely, replacing them with sodium ions. The water is genuinely softened, no hardness minerals remain. A salt-free conditioner changes the form of hardness minerals so they don’t deposit as scale, but doesn’t remove them. Salt-based is more effective for high hardness levels. Salt-free is appropriate for moderate hardness and is preferred by customers who want to avoid added sodium or the maintenance of salt replenishment.
How much does a water softener or filtration system cost?
Cost depends on system type, size, and installation complexity. Whole home systems are a meaningful home investment, we provide written estimates before any work begins so you know the full cost upfront. For larger systems, financing is available through Wisetack with quick pre-qualification and multiple tiers for all credit levels.Â
How long do water filtration and softener systems last?
Salt-based water softeners typically last 10–20 years with proper maintenance, salt replenishment and occasional resin cleaning. Whole home carbon filtration systems last 5–10 years depending on water quality and usage before media replacement is needed. The HALO 5 system has minimal maintenance requirements and a long service life with periodic media inspection. We walk you through maintenance expectations for any system we install before we leave.
Do you install water treatment systems for commercial facilities?
Yes. Commercial water filtration and conditioning for restaurants, food service operations, office buildings, and facilities throughout Metro East Illinois. Commercial systems require larger capacity and higher flow rates than residential, we size and install correctly for commercial demand. Call (618) 207-1647 to discuss your facility’s water quality needs.
